We are accepting Original Signs in person or by fax from your home local.  We are still accepting Resigns via hall to hall

Requirements (BCRC, I-9, 10 Hour OSHA, etc.)

The industrial sites in our jurisdiction require OSHA 10 training, BCRC drug testing, safety shoes (two different types see below), compliance with Fedral I-9 requirements, Red Cross First Aid/CPR , facial hair restrictions, etc. to gain entry to their plants.

BLUE HIGHLIGHTED  HEADINGS ARE LINKS TO VARIOUS TOPICS

BCRCThis is for drug testing- If and when you are referred to work in Local 531's jurisdiction, you will be instructed accordingly to comply with BCRC policy. The labor and management representatives of The Building and Construction Industry for Northwest Indiana have formed an alliance to address the problems caused by drug and alcohol abuse. Management and labor have created the Building and Construction Resource Center (hereafter BCRC), an independent not-for-profit corporation, which offers a wide range of services to its participants who include contractors, labor union organizations and construction industry and related workers. It is BCRC's purpose to provide a vehicle to help establish and maintain a workplace free of the destructive effects caused by the use of drugs and alcohol.  www.bcrcnet.com

OSHA 10 Hour Training- . Most JATC's offer/ require OSHA 10 training. Locally, the Consruction Advancement foundation routinely offers OSHA 10 at it's office in Portage , IN. CAF also offers online OSHA 10 training and certification online. Click on the OSHA 10 Hour Training link to see the CAF website.........CURRENTLY, MOST OF THE FACILITIES IN THE JURISDICTION OF LOCAL 531 REQUIRE OSHA 10, BUT DO NOT REQUIRE ANY RESTRICTIONS ON THE DATE OF TRAINING. THEREFORE AN OSHA CERTIFICATION THAT WAS OBTAINED 10 OR MORE YEARS AGO STILL SATISFIES THE OSHA 10 REQUIREMENT.

Red Cross First Aid/ CPR- Online Courses are now available at the American Red Cross of Northwest Indiana's website. This course is also offered on a limited basis at our apprenticeship school. Any Red Cross Chapter can help you with your  certification.

Facial Hair Restrictions- Some facilities require that facial hair is restricted to a moustache trimmed to the "corner of the mouth".

TWIC- Transportation Workers Identification Card- You do not need to apply for a TWIC until you have been assigned to a project which requires one.  Only special areas require a TWIC card.  Call the TWIC Help Desk for an appointement, or set up an appointment on line.  Google TWIC and follow instructions.

U.S. Department of Justice (I-9) Employment Eligibility Verification  all new employees of any U. S EMPOLYER are required to comply with federal gov't requirerments for verification of legal employment status.  Often you hear "two forms of I.D. are required"   Usually, a driver's license and birth certificate, or a driver's license and  a social security card are the  most readily available documents.  This link will give you information about the many options available to comply with Fed I-9 .

OSHA Construction Resource Manual- For use as a reference manual. Fun Reading Too!

Combo JIW/Welder- What does this mean? It is a JIW who will be responsible for fabricating and welding brackets for electrical supports for Conduit, cable tray and misc electrical equipment. A certification is not necessary.-

A call that requires an applicant to be able to "Certify" is required to test at either the jobsite, the contractor’s facility or Calumet Testing in Griffith http://www.calumettesting.com. Once you have bid on a job and have been referred, you will be scheduled for a test at the specific testing facility. This is a visual and bend test in the flat, vertical up, and overhead position. Please, don't bid on certified welder jobs if you are not reasonably sure that you can certify. Most the test are 3G & 4G tests. Certified welders are expected to also work on regular Journeyman Insisde Wireman work. They are not restricted to welding only.  If you do not pass your certification test, no pay will be given for the time taken to do the test.  If you do pass, you will be paid for your time. (not to exceed 4 hours)

Safety Toe Boots - Metatarsal Boots  There is a safety boot re-imbursment of up to $150 by the contractor.  Turn in your receipt to your foreman and have him sign and date a copy of the receipt for you to keep for your records.
Note that Metatarsal Boots are not the same as Safety Toe Boots.  At US Steel-Midwest you are required to wear Metatarsal Boots.
Met-Guard boots are available with internal, FLEXIBLE metatarsal protection alleviating the clumsy "outer gurard". Travelers have had difficulty finding suitable Met-Guard Boots in their respective area, however, good work boot suppliers in the NW. IND. region carry a wide range due to the local market demands.(Some give discounts to Union Members)
